Auslan (Australian Sign Language)

After studying Auslan for six years I am committed to offering inclusive ceremonies and meetings in Auslan for clients. I respect and understand Deaf culture in Australia and believe in equality for all.

I can make planning your special day so much easier by carrying out all meetings prior to the ceremony in your native Auslan. Any queries you have can be via video link, email or text.

If you want to have your ceremony in Auslan and if both of your legal witnesses understand Auslan let’s do this using your favourite interpreter. While I speak the beautiful love story that is your ceremony the Auslan interpreter will sign for all of us. The interpreter will need to provide a certificate of faithful performance and this is available here. This document is sent, along with the marriage documents, to the Office of Births Deaths and Marriages following the big day by me.

The interpreter will ensure that all legal aspects are covered and that the witnesses are completely included, along with understanding the ceremony and all documentation to be signed.

If you are a hearing couple and have invited guests who would prefer to have the ceremony in Auslan, they can arrange their preferred interpreter. This person can be a professional interpreter or a family member as there is no legal requirement for an exact interpretation. There is also no need for the interpreter to sign any documentation.

As part of my knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture I will ensure the interpreter is in an appropriate position so that those who need to have a clear line of sight to the interpreter.

I will also provide the interpreter, with your approval, a copy of the ceremony ahead of time to ensure complete understanding and preparation can happen.
